Avanafil, also known as Stendra, is a prescription medication approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to treat erectile dysfunction in men, primarily those with pulmonary arterial hypertension, who are taking other medications.

Avanafil helps relax blood vessels in the penis and works by preventing a certain enzyme in the body from breaking down a hormone that increases blood flow to the penis. Avanafil is the active ingredient in a new prescription medicine called Stendra.

How Is It Used?

Stendra, the active ingredient of which is Avanafil, is a medicine that treats male impotence, which is a condition where a man cannot get or keep an erection. It works by helping relax muscles in the penis, so it is easier to get and stay erect. The pill comes in two different strengths of 10 mg and 20 mg.

It’s a type of phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE-5) inhibitor and works by helping relax blood vessels in your penis to allow more blood to flow into your penis. It helps make your penis harder and allows you to stay in an erection for longer.

Avanafil Side Effects

Avanafil Side Effects

Stendra can have side effects that need medical attention. Serious side effects include sudden hearing loss, ringing in the ears, slow heartbeat, and sudden decrease or loss of vision. Talk to your doctor before taking Stendra if you have high blood pressure, heart conditions, diabetes, stomach ulcers, prostate enlargement, liver problems, or a bleeding problem.

Severe allergic reactions are also rare. The most serious side effects are decreased blood pressure, heart problems, and severe allergic reactions.

Stendra can also cause erectile dysfunction and low blood pressure in some patients. It is not known whether these effects are caused by Avanafil or the other ingredients in Stendra. However, when used properly, Stendra appears to be well tolerated.

As for the common, non-serious, side effects of Stendra, they include flushing, headache, stomach upset, and nasal congestion.

If you have a painful or prolonged erection that lasts 4 hours or longer, stop taking this medication and seek medical attention right away, or permanent problems may result.

This drug rarely causes a severe allergic reaction. However, if you notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, such as a rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, or trouble breathing, seek medical help right away.

This isn’t an exhaustive list of potential side effects. Contact your doctor or pharmacist if you experience any other side effects not listed above.

How Should Avanafil Be Taken?

Take Avanafil (Stendra) exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Do not take more than what is prescribed. Do not share your Avanafil with others. Be careful when using any medications or nutritional supplements because they may interfere with each other.

The recommended dose of Avanafil is 200 mg, which should be taken at least 30 minutes before sexual activity. Avanafil is taken by mouth once a day with food. Do not take more than one dose per day.

Before you start taking avanafil, and each time you get a refill, read the Patient Information Leaflet if one is available from your pharmacist. Inquire with your doctor or pharmacist if you have any concerns.

As directed by your doctor, take this medication by mouth with or without food as needed. This medication comes in a variety of dosages. Avanafil should be taken 15 to 30 minutes before sexual activity. Follow your doctor’s instructions for how long you should take this medication before sexual activity. Take no more than once a day.

The dosage is determined by your medical condition, treatment response, and any other medications you’re taking. Make a list of all the products you use and give it to your doctor and pharmacist (including prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, and herbal products).

If your condition does not improve, contact your doctor.

Who Should Not Take Avanafil?

Who Should Not Take Avanafil

Do not take Avanafil (Stendra) if you are taking vardenafil, tadalafil, or avanafil. Also, avoid Avanafil if you have liver problems or have a history of eye problems including retinal vein occlusion, macular degeneration, or glaucoma. Avanafil may increase your risk of having a heart attack or stroke.

Pregnant women must not use Avanafil unless advised to do so by their doctor. Pregnant women may develop severe birth defects if they take Avanafil.

Avanafil does not interact with alcohol and is safe to use with medications containing grapefruit juice. Avoid using avanafil if you are allergic to sildenafil or tadalafil or if you take a nitrate medication for chest pain (such as nitroglycerin) or high blood pressure (like amlodipine).

Avanafil Drug Interactions

Drug interactions may change how your medications work or increase your risk for serious side effects. This document does not contain all possible drug interactions. Keep a list of all the products you use (including prescription/nonprescription drugs and herbal products) and share it with your doctor and pharmacist.

Before you take medication or engage in any other treatment, it’s important to first talk with your doctor. A product that may interact with this drug is: riociguat. Nitrates can lower blood pressure in people who have chest pain, heart failure, and unstable angina.

Avanafil may be taken with other medications in order to treat erectile dysfunction, without needing to inform your doctor. Avanafil is also an FDA-approved medication for the treatment of pulmonary hypertension. Inhaled nitric oxide (INO) is also sometimes used to treat pulmonary hypertension.

If you’re also taking an alpha blocker medication to treat an enlarged prostate/BPH, your blood pressure could drop too low which can lead to dizziness and fainting. Your doctor should carefully monitor your blood pressure during your first few months on this medication.

Avanafil Vs Viagra

Avanafil Vs Viagra

Both Stendra and Viagra are PDE5 inhibitors that are used to treat erectile dysfunction.

Currently, Stendra is only available as a brand name. Although the chemical name is avanafil, the drug is only available under the brand name Stendra.

Stendra should be taken 15 minutes before sexual activity in a dose of 100 mg or 200 mg. It can also be taken 30 minutes before sexual activity at a dose of 50 mg.

Approximately one hour before sexual activity, Viagra should be taken. Only one dose of Stendra or Viagra should be taken in a single day.

To be effective, the medication must be taken with sexual stimulation, regardless of the drug or dose. You can take either drug with or without food.

Stendra was found to be as effective as Viagra and other PDE5 inhibitors in a review of clinical studies. Stendra is also less effective at lowering blood pressure and has fewer side effects and drug interactions, according to the study.

Another review of studies concluded that Stendra is safe and effective but predicted that its market position would be uncertain. This is because all PDE5 inhibitors are similar, except Stendra, all of them are available in generic form, saving the patient a significant amount of money.

Only your doctor can determine the most effective medication for you based on your medical condition(s), history, and other medications you’re taking.
